Unified Messaging represents the convergence of voice mail, e-mail, and fax so that all messages are stored in a single location and can be accessed from a variety of devices, including telephones and PCs. Unified Communications (UC) takes Unified Messaging a step further by extending message access to additional devices and technologies, such as mobile phones, pagers, PDAs, and browsers. In addition, Unified Communications provides notification features that will alert subscribers in different ways when they receive a message that meets certain different criteria. For example, subscribers can specify that they want to be paged when they receive urgent messages from their managers or that they want to be contacted by Sametime when they receive messages from specific customers. Customers want to use their existing e-mail and voice mail infrastructures for Unified Communications solutions and expect e-mail and voice mail providers to form partnerships to deliver complete solutions. Domino Unified Communications Services (DUCS) provide the platform and the key services on which partners can build Unified Communications solutions that use Domino as the Unified Message store.
